Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Jonathan "KazooCruiser" Gilbert

Jonathan "KazooCruiser" Gilbert, Master of Ceremonies
(Zuccotti Park, NYC, November 2011)
Jonathan "KazooCruiser" Gilbert is the undisputed symbol of the Zuccotti Park contingency. More than a veteran, he is the recipient of the one and only "Purple Heart" for his tireless and impassioned demonstrations to educate the public on the 99% ideology espoused by the Occupy Wall Street movement.

From abstract performance art spectacles featuring the true nature of the monetary and capitalist system to his impromptu and unscripted monologues and dialogues with the multitudes that gather to hear him speak, one can not avoid being irrevocably changed by witnessing his presentation.

In this November 2011 photo (top left), we find KazooCruiser in the midst of one of his fabled demonstrations and dialogues with a crowd of passersby on the Church Street side of Zuccotti Park directly across from NYPD temporary headquarters in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

Jonathan "KazooCruiser" Gilbert, Guitarist & Master of Relaxation
When not on "active duty" evangelizing the 99% ideology, we find Mr. Gilbert playing his guitar and contemplating new and interesting ways to educate others in an unconventional way.

Most memorable quote? "You don't know how to weep."

Favorite food? Roasted chicken!

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Caroline X.

Caroline X., Future Long Island Mom
Caroline X. is the epitome of Occupier Mom-Energy. I first met Caroline while the Occupiers were being graciously hosted at Church of St Paul and St Andrew. She and her husband Chris would harmoniously go about their daily routine just a few feet away from me and my Occupier camping buddy.

Chris, being strong and silent, and Caroline, being gentle and ever-smiling, the most words we ever exchanged at that time amounted to "goodmorning", "goodnight" and "hello".

I recently happened upon Caroline near the Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in Times Square, literally in the glow of the Mary Poppins marquis.

Most memorable quote? "How are you?"

Favorite food? Something good.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Kenn L.

Kenn L., Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist,
Actor, Construction Worker &
founding member of "Fatal Puppy Band"
Kenn L. is truly a multi-talented fellow and a Zuccotti Park veteran. I first encountered Kenn at the barricades on the Broadway side of Zuccotti Park during the days immediately following the raid at the original encampment.

He introduced himself to me by handing me a CD of original music by Fatal Puppy Band titled "Wall Street Takeover Vol 1". The music is really great and puts one in the mind of 70's David Bowie.

Fun facts about Kenn? He has two children in college, he plays multiple instruments, he had a speaking role in a film where he shared a scene with Willem Dafoe and I have it on good authority that he was offered a role in the now classic film "Platoon".

Most memorable quote? "I give you the same thing I give my son."

Favorite food? Omaha Steak!

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Outlaw Bobby Steele

Outlaw Bobby Steele, Master Communicator
Outlaw Bobby Steele is a true-blood Zuccotti Park veteran. In the aftermath of the raid at the original encampment, he could be found faithfully manning his post at the Broadway side of the Zuccotti Park barricades holding a sign designed to catalyze thought.

If engaged in conversation, Outlaw Bobby Steele will speak to you, but other than that he prefers to allow his abstract and unarguably artistic manner of presenting himself and his signage to convey his messages.

Yes, his face is covered in tattoos. Their meaning is much fodder for deep thought.

Most memorable quote? "Stand your ground."

Favorite food? Something hot.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Alison X.

Alison X., The Fresh Face of Zuccotti
Alison X. is the very definition of unpretentious beauty and the face of the USO of Zuccotti veterans if there is such a thing.

Each during my tour of duty at the encampment, in addition to serving her breakfast at Food Tent, I invariably happened upon Alison--zaftig, fresh-faced and Ivory girl gorgeous--gliding calmly and seemingly without a care on her own adventure in Occupy.

Most memorable quote? "I'm Alison."

Favorite food? Whole grain carbohydrates.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Mike X. aka Menace

Mike X. aka Menace, The Charmer
Mike X. aka Menace is likely the most charming fellow you'll ever meet and a bonafide Zuccotti Pak veteran.

I first noticed him whilst serving him breakfast at Food Tent in the original encampment. With a fearless spirit and unboastful confidence, he looked me deeply in the eye at each of our encounters.

Aside from his potent form of Casanova charm, his concern and interest in the well-being of other people--especially women--is particularly special.

Most memorable quote? "Are you OK with him?"

Favorite food? Whatever I was serving that morning.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Dave & Donna X.

Dave & Donna, Road Dogs for Life
Dave & Donna X. are the very symbol of term "There is no "I" in team". Wherever you see Dave, Donna is nearby and vice versa.

My first introduction to Dave and Donna occurred at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew. The space in the sanctuary being as vastly expansive as it is, I witnessed them silently going about their lives--together. Their endearing togetherness can also be witnessed at the local Whole Foods where they share meals and what appears to be pleasant conversation, minor squabbles and companionship.

They represent another aspect of OCCUPY NYC 2012: marriage and family. And isn't that the goal of all of this "activism"? To create a world where we can do simple things like have a meal with our spouse in an environment safe enough to raise children if that is what we choose to do?

Most memorable quote from Dave? Non-verbal. He looks like Freddie Mercury.  'nough said!

Most memorable quote from Donna? "But, this is free..."

Favorite food? Something from Whole Foods.

Chris X., West Park Church Co-op MVP
Chris X. is the MVP of West Park Church Co-op. My introduction to occurred at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, where he silently entered and exited my field of vision during the early morning hours.

Chris is usually en route to one task or another that would likely go undone if he were interrupted in his pursuits.

More of an action-oriented rather than a discussion-oriented person, Chris is a pleasant and calming presence.

Most memorable quote? "Fuck her!"

Favorite food? Coffee.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew

Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew
Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew is an honorary Zuccotti Park veteran.

An initial oasis and respite of displaced Occupiers, Pastor K allowed the Occupy Wall Street community to partake of a nomadic experience consisting of a daily routine of establishing "camp sites" that would magically disappear into the balcony pews each morning.

At night the sanctuary was filled with Occupiers peacefully chatting and settling down to rest in a cavernous space filled with sculpture, lighting fixtures, organs and a rich, opulant decor that was awe inspiring.

Most memorable quote? Silence.

Favorite food? Black beans.

Who's Who in OCCUPY NYC 2012: West Park Church

West Park Church
West Park Church is an honorary Zuccotti Park veteran.

As the temporary home of scores of Occupiers--first during the exodus from the gracious hospitality received from St. Paul St. Andrew Church literally just steps away and again as the home of West Park Church Co-op--Pastor Bob Brashear provided a priceless opportunity to "Occupy" a sacred and historic space.

In addition to being a gorgeous religious work of art and architectural design, West Park Church is a serene and peaceful space of spiritual significance that defies description in this medium. You'd have to visit to experience it for yourself.

Most memorable quote? The sound of the wind and rain in the canyon that can only be heard in the loft.

She's participated in a variety of different working groups and other than expert handling of major dilemmas such as calling her dad or keeping the peace, her skills and abilities as an all-around Super Hero are a very well-kept secret.

Newly wed, Amanda is deep within the throes of marital bliss and continues to revel in her uncanny likeness to Natasha Lyonne.

Amanda's fields of expertise include sourcing and coordination of squats, tabling and distribution of flyers, Occupy Wall Street news and zines and the occasional turkey and cheese sandwich.

The Face of the KazooCruiser Constituency

Solidarity went in search of the face of the Occupy Movement. Here's what we found...

Tom S.*, Traveling Occupier
Tom S.*  22 Describes himself as a traveling Occupier and NYC as the Mecca of the Occupy Movement. He’s a new arrival as of Friday, April 6, 2012 and carries a cardboard sign that reads: Free Hugs. Dallas was his first Occupy experience with 100+ tents and the police force directing and bussing mental health patients and release criminals directly to the encampment. His goals at Occupy is networking, he advocates spiritual evolution of the human species and ideals similar to the Star Trek or Federation of Planets societal structure and compassion-based society. When asked if armed guards deployed under marshall law ordered him to disperse from the Occupy installation, he replied that he, ”would be shot”. Tony believes the Occupy community to be his chosen family via shared experiences, ideals and beliefs which he succinctly phrases as, ”United as one, divided by zero.” He believes the movement is about truth. When asked what he would be doing if he were not Occupying, he explained that he believes that situation in this country is so urgent and his beliefs and opinions to be so strong about these matters that he would be doing something quite similar, expressing his political views and making an effort to change the status quo.

Melanie P.*, 7-month Occupy Veteran
Melanie P.* 21 Maintains a collection of cool cardboard signs with political slogans and catchphrases of her own design. She conceptualizes her participation in the Occupy Movement as an effort to bring attention to social injustice and believes that the media is working in opposition to that effort. Melissa is a 7-month veteran of Occupy. Originally from Virginia, she participated in Occupy DC but found the DC movement to be unmotivated with its participants segregated by age and politics. While Occupy Union Square, Melissa successfully challenged police efforts to have the Occupiers disperse by publicly posting a law she claims grants her the right to sleep on the sidewalk. When asked what she would be doing if she were not Occupying, Melissa explained that she would be traveling. She has a mother in Virginia but she chooses to travel and Occupy.

Sean F.*, Farmer and Occupier
Sean F.* 22 Began Occupying at the inception of the movement at Zuccotti Park. His continued involvement in Occupy is based upon the relationships he’s built with other Occupiers and his spiritual connection to the Occupy Movement. Stefan has visited other splinter Occupy encampments and believes that term ”99%” equates to a conversation about race, gender and class. When asked where he calls ”home” he replied that, ”New York Occupy is sort of like a home,” and there is no other single location that he would describe as ”home”. He conceptualizes ”home” as contextual and relationship-based. When asked what he would be doing if he were not Occupying he explains that he would be, ”farming” some place ”far away”, ”growing something…” and maybe doing ”mountain top removal” in ”West Virginia”. Stefan says there is ”no going back” from here, he would only envision himself ”going forward.”

*Names have been changed to protect Occupier and individual privacy.
